The Best Investment is You!

I didn’t know what self-awareness was most of my adult life. It wasn’t until some unexpected disturbance or life event happened that I was then forced to stop and dig deep to understand how I felt and the best way to respond or show up in the situation.

It seems to be so much easier to try and unpack someone else’s life than to dive deep into the depths of who we are and what makes us tick. We explore new hobbies with confidence, sharpen our skills for career growth, and engage in countless discussions about enhancing our connections with others. Yet, we often overlook the importance of investing in and understanding ourselves.

How can we navigate life’s continual ups and downs, especially in relationships, without an understanding of our own unique makeup, strengths, and weaknesses?

Self-awareness is the ability to see ourselves clearly. Who we are, how others see us, and how we fit into the world. It gives us power and a comfort in knowing ourselves.

Self-aware people are: more fulfilled, tend to have stronger relationships, and perform better at work.

Today, know that….

  • YOU are worth investing in.

  • YOU are a one-of-a-kind creation – there is no one else like you in this world.

  • YOU have this one life to live. Treat it/yourself well!

Take a moment to reflect on this: the creator crafted you uniquely. Friend, it is SO worth spending time to understand how you function, discovering your skills, strengths, desires, and weaknesses.

Invest in yourself. Here are 3 steps to get started:

  1. Commit: Commit to self-discovery and self-awareness as a priority in your life.

  2. Reflection: For 30 days, take time for introspection and self-reflection.

Set aside regular periods in your day, whether it's in the morning, evening, or during breaks, to pause and reflect on your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Ask yourself probing questions such as "What am I feeling right now?" or "What thoughts are dominating my mind?"

Journaling can be a powerful tool for this step, allowing you to capture your reflections and gain deeper insights into yourself.

This TEDxMileHigh talk by Tasha Eurich, Increase your self-awareness with one simple fix, is extremely insightful on the benefits of asking ourselves “what” not “why” as we introspect.

  3. Ask for Feedback: This may not be fun or easy, however, reach out to friends, family members, colleagues, or mentors and ask for their honest feedback about your strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.

Be open to receiving constructive criticism and insights, and use them as opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Remember to approach feedback with curiosity and humility, recognizing that others may offer valuable insights that you might not have considered on your own.

This self-awareness is crucial for navigating the path of learning new skills, improving relationships, and discerning which relationships are healthy and worth investing in.

On your side and in your corner!
